Members of the Board of Trade’s Company of Young Professionals (CYP) and Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Programs had a unique opportunity to learn from two negotiation experts on June 1st. Neil Gold, an accomplished University Professor and Frank Borowicz, a highly regarded lawyer and member of the Queen’s Counsel, shared insights on Negotiating Better Results.
This highly interactive session provided guests the opportunity to practice various negotiating techniques while also learning the theory behind them. Some key points to consider when negotiating include:
- Cultural differences. In many cultures you must establish a relationship first before beginning any kind of negotiation. Take time to get learn local customs
- The power of understanding. People do not just need to be heard, they need to be understood. This ensures reliable information that will help with the negotiation process
- Negotiating techniques. The difference between positional bargaining and interest based bargaining is understanding why this issue it’s important to them.
The Vancouver Board of Trade would like to thank Mr. Gold and Mr. Borowicz for taking the time to address members of the CYP and LOT Programs. Their insight was extremely valuable to as negotiations remain a key part of each of our day to day lives. Special thanks also go to venue sponsor, the SFU Beedie School of Business.
