Tuesday, September 21st saw nearly 2500 candidates stream through the doors of the Vancouver Convention Centre for the Working Super Fair. A joint initiative of the Vancouver Sun, Province, Working.com and the Vancouver Board of Trade, the fair promised job seekers an opportunity to meet with some of BC’s top employers, network, and hear industry experts share helpful knowledge.

By the time the doors opened at 10am, there was a line-up of eager and determined job seekers that filled the Convention Centre lobby. The typical candidate was experienced, well-dressed and carrying resumes. As one woman entered the exhibition hall, she prepared her friend with the simple phrase: “business cards out.”

Many of BC’s top employers were in attendance including LOT program sponsors BCIT, Scotiabank, SFU Business, and Labatt Breweries of Canada. The morning rush of candidates evolved into a constant stream of new people arriving throughout the day, giving exhibitors little chance to rest. Most were handing out materials and speaking with candidates straight from opening to close.

In between networking and meeting prospective employers, candidates had the opportunity to listen to a variety of outstanding speakers throughout the day. The Working Super Fair speaker series was sponsored by the New York Institute of Technology and quickly became a popular destination. Guests were treated to presentations on topics such as interview preparation, job finding resources, volunteerism and networking tips. The speakers were a highlight for many and included CYP member and BCIT Instructor Kemp Edmonds, who addressed how to build your personal brand through social media.

The fair proved to be a busy and successful day for employers and candidates alike. Employers had access to a large pool of qualified candidates while job seekers had the opportunity to connect with HR professionals representing various organizations and gain business intelligence from the Working Super Fair speaker series.

All of this would not have been possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers: Ghazale Amir, Kitty Au, Naveen Aujla, Julian Bogas, Nissa Carmack, Kaitlyn Cook, Ricky Dasgupta, Christian Desharnais, Nima Salmani Fartash, Derek Fenton, Param Ghuman, Tanis Hoeltgen, Mandy Hoeltgen, Zoe Ketcheson, Samantha Lowe, Logan Eskesen, Jacqueline Marshall, Justinne Ramirez, Farah Saad, Pamreen Sidhu, and Cameron Walker. Thank you all for your outstanding contributions! We would also like to thank our speaker series sponsor the New York Institute of Technology for their contributions.
